Metasequoia glyptostroboides

Being a 50 million-year-old living fossil, Dawn Redwood is truly the king of the forest.  Discovered growing wild in the deep woods of China in the 1940’s, this close relative of Taxodium (Bald Cypress) and Sequoia trees has a commanding pyramidal shape and can grow up to 100’ tall.  It prefers moist, deep, and well-drained soil that is slightly acidic.  Dawn Redwood makes a great specimen tree for any accommodating landscape.  Give it full to part sun with a 25’ berth and it will reward with soft, fern-like foliage that turns a beautiful reddish bronze in the fall.
